Police identified 23-year-old Shane Sanchez as the victim of Saturday morning’s fatal shooting in Throgs Neck.
It happened just before 2 a.m. outside of 2765 Sampson Ave., which is part of the NYCHA Throgs Neck Houses where Sanchez lived.
Police said officers arrived and found Sanchez on the ground with a gunshot wound to his chest. He was taken to NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi where he was pronounced dead.
Police sources told News 12 that there was an argument earlier in the night, which led to the shooting.
More than 12 hours after the shooting, investigators were still on scene. There were at least four evidence markers and crime tape crossed a walkway outside of the building.
Sanchez’s family was too emotional to speak with News 12 on Saturday afternoon, but neighbors said he was a great kid who stayed out of trouble.
“A very humble kid who got along with everybody,” said Blanca Melendez, of Throgs Neck. “Everybody loved him. He’d do favors for anybody that needed a favor.”
“He was a quiet kid, quiet kid, happy kid,” said Nelson Fernandez, of Throgs Neck. “He would make you laugh. He was very into collecting baseball cards.”
No arrests have been made as of Saturday evening.
This is the third death from a shooting in Throgs Neck in the last week. In an interview earlier this week, Council Member Kristy Marmorato told News 12 the uptick in crime is due to having only three cars patrolling multiple neighborhoods.
