City leaders and advocates are rallying behind a Brooklyn high school student taken into ICE custody following what they describe as a routine court appearance.
Mamadou Diallo, 20, an asylum seeker from Guinea, attends Brooklyn Frontiers High School — a free public high school in Downtown Brooklyn that serves students ages 16 to 21. Advocates say Diallo was detained on Aug. 4 after leaving a court hearing at Federal Plaza.
The New York Immigration Coalition posted his photo on X, saying he’s now being held in a Pennsylvania detention center, far from his school and community. Brooklyn Council Member Rita Joseph also posted about the case, calling for Diallo’s “immediate release” and criticizing what she called “Trump’s cruel authoritarian tactics.”
This isn’t the first case of its kind.
News 12 covered a similar situation earlier this year involving a Bronx high school student detained under similar circumstances. Diallo is at least the third New York City public school student taken into ICE custody at court this year.
New York City Schools Chancellor Melissa Avilés-Ramos also weighed in, saying she is “heartbroken” by the news and reminding families that public schools remain safe and welcoming places. “We encourage you to continue sending your children to school this fall, where they are cared for and valued,” she wrote on X.
Later this morning, city leaders and immigration groups plan to rally outside the Tweed Courthouse in Manhattan, demanding Diallo’s release and return to Brooklyn.
